The fund manager will leave the firm with immediate effect, but Standard Life Investments could not provide further details on the reason for his departure.

While the firm looks for his replacement the management of the £135m fund as well as the £38m Standard Life Investments Ignis Smaller Companies fund will be handed to Harry Nimmo on an interim basis.

Nimmo currently manages the £1.1bn UK Smaller Companies fund at Standard Life Investments.

Trenchard joined Standard Life Investments in 2007 as part of the UK smaller companies team. He was previously working at First State Investments where he managed the British Opportunities fund.

The SLI UK Opportunities fund has returned 10.2 per cent over one year to the end of October versus the Investment Association UK All Companies sector average of 7.6 per cent, according to FE. Over the past six months it has returned a 5.2 per cent loss, compared to -4.1 per cent for the sector.
