Old Mutual Global Investors has appointed former BlackRock manager Rob Weatherston to the Old Mutual Japanese Equity fund.

The fund is currently run by the global equities team, and Weatherston’s appointment will be effective from 17 June.

Weatherston previously managed Asian Pacific equity funds at BlackRock, where he worked between 1996 and 2014.

The Old Mutual Japanese Equity fund seeks to generate a total return through qualitative stock selection, a quantitative screening process and a thematic overlay approach.

“While the overall Japanese market is currently out of favour, there are many stocks that are performing very well. We see significant opportunities to generate returns within the market,” Weatherston says. He will report to Josh Crabb, head of Asian equities at OMGI.

Crabb says: “Throughout his career managing Japanese equities, Rob has had extensive experience of running total return, value and growth investments and, having lived in Japan for four years, his considerable knowledge of the region’s social and cultural history will be invaluable to investors.”
