Alliance Trust Savings reveals top funds

Alliance Trust Savings has revealed the most popular funds sold through the platform in August.

Three index-tracking funds made the top five funds in August, led by the £431m Vanguard US Equity Index fund, which tracks the S&P Total Market index.

It was joined by the Vanguard FTSE Developed Europe Ex UK Equity index and Vanguard Emerging Markets Stock Index funds.

Alliance Trust Savings head of platform Garry Mcluckie says: “The top twenty most popular funds on the Alliance Trust Savings platform is reflective of where the markets and consumer sentiment is in general.

“There appears to be a real mix of caution – some may say realism – and optimism with a number of emerging markets funds, bonds and passives all proving very popular at the moment.”

Mcluckie adds: “Passives in particular remain very popular with Vanguard holding eight of the top twenty most popular investment slots alone.

“Passive versus active debate aside, there’s no denying that passives can be a good low cost investment as part of a diversified portfolio.

“The fact that they tend not to pay cash rebates means they are less available on other platforms which rely heavily on retaining customer rebates for their own profit.”
