FTSE 100 CLOSE: Serco and Essar slip to bottom

Outsourcing specialist Serco and Essar Energy were the session’s biggest fallers as the FTSE 100 index closed slightly down.

Serco and Essar both dropped 5.9% to 527p and 107.1p, respectively. Miners Xstrata and Kazakhmys both closed 4.9% to 1,137.5p and 951.5p, respecitvely, while engineer Weir Group slipped 4.7% to 1,939p.

Testing company Intertek was the biggest riser with share price increasing by 2.5% to 2,372p, while oil giant BP climbed 1.6% higher to 504.6p. (article continues below)

Brewer Diageo increased by 1.5% to 1,527.5p, while both Centrica and Petrofac rose by 1.3% to 310.3p and 1,595p, respectively.
