Man Group was the biggest riser at the close of trading as the listed hedge fund manager soared despite earlier announcing that profits had dropped in the first nine months of its financial year.
The FTSE 100-listed company saw its share price surge ahead, climbing 12.7% higher to 147.5p, after earlier reporting that outflows had slowed.
Hargreaves Lansdown rose 4.5% to 447.6p, while Essar Energy increased by 4.3% to 109.4p.
Cruise operator Carnival climbed 3.9% higher to 1,920p, as interdealer broker ICAP increased by 3.3% to 397.3p.
The biggest faller was copper miner Kazakhmys, dropping by 4.2% to 1,062p. It was joined at the bottom by engineer Weir Group, which slipped 3.6% to 2,030p.
Gold company Polymetal International was down 2.2% to 1,060p, steelmaker Evraz dropped 2.1% to 415p, while Cairn Energy closed 1.6% lower to 338.6p.
