FTSE 100 CLOSE: Essar Energy surges

Essar Energy was the biggest climber at the close of trading with share price increasing by 7.4% to 122p, as the blue-chip index once more neared 6,000.

Royal Bank of Scotland Group increased by 6.6% to 28.21p, as interdealer broker ICAP rose 4.3% to 430.1p.

Tullow Oil climbed 4% higher while Hargreaves Lansdown increased by 3.6% to 495.2p.

The biggest faller was precious metal producer Polymetal International dropping 3.2% to 963.5p, as gold miner Randgold Resources slipped 2.3% to 6,495p. (article continues below)

Engineer GKN slipped 1.4% to 216.5p, asset manager Schroders saw its non-voting share class drop 1% to 1,281p, while United Utilities also fell 1% to 614.5p.
