FTSE 100 CLOSE: Essar Energy continues to rise

Essar Energy was once again the biggest climber on the FTSE 100 index today, as its share price moved up by 12.33% to reach 140p.

The second highest climber, the Royal Bank of Scotland, demonstrated weaker gains across the day as its share price rose 3.94% at close to 29.25p a share.

Resolution Limited, mining company Antofagasta, and Hammerson were the remaining top performing daily stocks, even though their gains were only 1.79%, 1.55% and 1.25% respectively.

Engineering group Imi demonstrated the biggest fall, as share price fell 2.25% to 999p.

CRH slipped 2.2% to reach 1,378p a share while National Grid was down 1.94% to 631.50p. (article continues below)

Seventh Trent and Johnson Matthey fell by 1.76% and 1.63%, respectively.
