FTSE 100 CLOSE: Budget fails to inspire markets

The FTSE 100 closed flat after chancellor George Osborne delivered his third Budget to parliament.

The Budget had few big shocks for investors, with the index closing 0.01% higher at 5,891.95.

Engineer Weir Group was the biggest faller, with its share price sinking 6.2% to 1,859p.

Insurers closed lower with Aviva dropping 5.5% to 353p, while Standard Life fell 3.6% to 236.5p and Admiral slipped 2.5% lower to 1,168p. Eurasian Natural Resources completed the top five fallers as its share price closed 3% lower to 643.5p. (article continues below)

The biggest climber was supermarket chain Sainsburys, rising by 4.5% to 319.3p. Gold miner Randgold Resources rose 3.2% to 6,595p, as Mexican silver miner Fresnillo finished 3% higher at 1,737p.

Plumbing supplies company Wolseley and Imperial Tobacco Group both finished 2.6% higher at 2,558p.
