US fund management house Thornburg Investment Management has opened an office in London to strengthen its international distribution capabilities.

The firm has hired Chris Elsmark and Karim Elfar to lead Thornburg Global Advisors, which is the London-based entity responsible for the firm’s professional and institutional investor market outside the US.

Elsmark, who joins from Copthall Partners, and Elfar, who was most recently at Davis Advisors, are responsible for developing and leading the firm’s franchise outside of its domestic market.

The new office is the first overseas office opened by Thornburg and comes in recognition of the trend for professional and institutional investors to award global investment mandates.

The firm already has a Irish-domiciled Ucits range – Thornburg Global Investment – that holds five funds, including the Thornburg Global Opportunities, Thornburg Global Equity Income and Thornburg Global Equity Ex-US funds.

Thornburg head of global distribution Peter Trevisani says: “Establishing an office in London, a global financial centre, will enhance the awareness of Thornburg’s investment capabilities internationally and enable us to better serve our clients.

“The appointments of Chris and Karim will significantly add to our international distribution expertise and reflects our long-term commitment to serving clients outside the US.”
