Investec Asset Management has appointed former Investment Management Association chief executive Richard Saunders as a non-executive director.

Saunders spent 11 years at the IMA, the organisation which represents the UK investment management industry, and stepped down from his role at the end of 2012.

Saunders played an important role in the creation of the IMA, leading a merger between the Association of Unit Trusts and Investment Funds with the Fund Managers’ Association in February 2002.

Investec CEO Hendrik du Toit says: “I was privileged to have worked with Richard while he was on the IMA board and have the highest regard for his insights into the challenges facing our industry. We look forward to his participation on our board.”

Saunders says: “I have long been an admirer of Investec Asset Management.  It is a real pleasure to have joined this board. I am optimistic about the future of Investec Asset Management and I look forward to making a positive contribution to the governance of this exciting firm.”

Prior to the IMA, Saunders’ earlier career was spent at the Treasury, with further roles at media group United News and Media and as a communications consultant. He has also served as press secretary to the Rt Hon Lord Lamont when he was Chancellor of the Exchequer.
