Smith & Williamson fund manager Mark Pignatelli is to retire from investment management at the end of the year.

Pignatelli, who currently co-manages the £37m European Growth Trust alongside Michael Pascall, is departing to “pursue interests outside of the investment management industry”.

Pignatelli, who has managed the fund since 2008, will stay on until Christmas and no replacement management announcements have yet been made.

Joining S&W in 2008, Pignatelli was previously Schroder Investment Management head of Europe and then subsequently chief investment officer for the firm. Pignatelli left Schroders in 2004 to establish Remus Capital.

Pignatelli began his investment career at Baring Asset Management in 1987, before becoming the firm’s head of the European investment team in 1995.

Philip Lawlor will also be returning to S&W later in the year as group strategist, set to start on 7 October. Lawlor had originally joined S&W as an investment strategist in 2010 to replace the retiring Richard Cragg.
