Afternoon markets: Petrofac strongest at the FTSE 100 close

Oil & gas engineering company Petrofac was the biggest climber at the close of trading as share price climbed 5.1% higher to 1,443p.

The blue chip index itself closed 1.2% higher at 5,490.

Joining Petrofac at the top was engineer Weir Group and Vedanta Resources, both crising 3.4% higher to 1,958p and 1,101p, respectively.

BG Group and listed hedge fund Man Group both rose 3.2% to 1,367p and 134.3p.

The biggest faller was Premier Inn owner Whitbread dropping 3.9% at the close of trading to 1,514p.

Luxury goods company Burberry dropped 2.2% to 1,190p, as banks Barclays and Standard Chartered also slipped.

Barclays dropped 1.6% to 178.6p, while Standard Chartered dropped 1% to 1,406p. B&Q owner Kingfisher dropped 0.9% to 245.8p.
