AXA Investment Managers has promoted Ian Smith and Paul Birchenough as co-managers of the £130m AXA Framlington Emerging Markets fund, previously run solely by Julian Thompson.
Both fund managers will report to the emerging markets team’s head Thompson.
Birchenough joined Axa in 2011 from Nevsky Capital, where he specialised in the Latin America region, while Smith joined a year later from Matrix Group, where he was an investment analyst.
Thompson was previously manager of the AXA Framlington Emerging Markets Fund and will continue to manage the AXA WF Framlington Emerging Markets, which is the offshore equivalent of the fund.
AXA Framlington global head Mark Beveridge says of Birchenough and Smith: “They both have extensive experience in emerging markets and we are confident that they will continue to successfully manage the fund.”
Axa has also hired Alex Khosla, UBS Investment Bank’s analyst as an emerging markets equities analyst.
In this role, Khosla will focus on the energy, beverages and tobacco sectors as well as monitoring macroeconomic issues in India, Chile, Peru and Colombia.
Thompson says: “Alex is a strong addition to our growing emerging markets team and we are very pleased that he has chosen to join us. Alex knows the team well from his previous role in Latin American equity sales at UBS and brings with him considerable experience in Latin American equity markets.”
