Frankly, in times like these no ship is safe. So far we’re weathering the storm quite well, but life could get a lot tougher yet.

Quite honestly, whatever I do is bound to be wrong in conditions like this. How much do you think SocGen contributed to the chaos at the beginning of the week? It makes you wonder if the banks really know what they’re doing.
Subject: Stay calm.
These are exceptional times in which to be managing money. I don’t know whether to congratulate you on your timing or commiserate that life has seldom been more difficult. If it’s any consolation, I don’t know what to expect either.
Subject: Don’t even think about it!
Honestly, any job with a hint of investment management or banking – or even life assurance, for that matter, might not be too long term. What about the HR department of a firm of insolvency practitioners? Their business may be booming soon.
Subject: Do you know?
There’s a girl called Lisa Aspinall who has been hired by Hugh to handle PR in-house. Hugh is keen we should work closely together but, as my personal communications adviser, could you tell me how best to handle her.
Subject: More gossip.
My political contacts tell me the government is about to come down on the banking industry. Apart from concerns over business models (Northern Rock) and internal controls (SocGen), they don’t like big City bonuses and reckon there are votes in action.
