What a year it has been. Today’s publication of the Investment Management Association’s statistics for November illustrate just how dramatic it was for investors.
At the start of 2008 the most popular sector – on a net retail sales basis – was Specialist. However, following a huge rise in volatility and problems in both commodity and commercial property funds, the Specialist sector suffered the biggest outflows in November (PDF).
Sterling-based Corporate Bond is now the most popular sector with investors. It was the second consecutive month a fixed income sector has been most popular with Gilts taking top spot in October. It serves to illustrate how unpopular equities are at present.
That is it for 2008. I would like to wish all our readers a happy Christmas and let us hope for a more prosperous 2009.
