FTSE trends downwards as Article 50 date revealed

The FTSE 100 and the pound are trending downwards on the news Article 50 will be triggered on March 29.

The blue-chip index has dropped 0.21 per cent to 7,409.18, while sterling fell 0.05 per cent to 1.2398 against the dollar at midday.

Prime Mnister Theresa May’s spokesperson announced the date today despite no announcement of an early election. The triggering of Article 50 starts the two-year countdown to Britain leaving the European Union.
