The FCA has issued a warning that fraudsters are acting as a Janus Capital “clone firm” in order to scam investors.
The fraudulent firm, Janus Options/Kinetex Limited, runs a website with branding similar to FCA-registered firm Janus Capital – the US asset manager.
The clone firm is registered at Long Lane, while the real Janus Capital has its UK address listed at Ropemaker St.
The FCA says the clone firm has been targeting people in the UK, claiming to be authorised, and warns investors to be “especially wary” if they’ve been cold called.
It says clone firms typically contact people out of the blue and use the name of the genuine firm, its firm reference number or other details.
Unauthorised firms are outside the authority of the FCA, but can be prosecuted by police.
The FCA launched the Smartscam section of its website several years ago to alert consumers to clone firms and other scams.
