Founded in 1908 as a partnership between Colonel Augustus Baillie and Carlyle Gifford, Baillie Gifford is an independent investment management firm. Headquartered in Edinburgh with offices in London and New York, it is owned and run by 40 of its senior executives who continue to operate as a partnership. The firm employs 844 staff of which 206 are investment professionals.
The firm offers a range of OEICs and investment trusts for retail and institutional clients. The majority of its assets under management, which stand at £114.5bn as at 31 December 2014, are institutional. UK pension funds represent 22% of Baillie Gifford’s business.
Although the core market of its retail business continues to be the discretionary and wealth management groups and top-end investment advisers, James Budden, director of retail marketing and distribution, says the firm hopes to gain more traction with IFAs through platforms.
