Hargreaves Lansdown has released its sales figures for 2009 on its Vantage fund platform, showing the top performing funds last year.

Two offerings from Close Asset Management topped the table. Close Special Situations was far and away the strongest performer, delivering 246.87%. Next was Close Beacon Investment with a return of 185.8%. Both funds sit in the Investment Management Association (IMA) UK Smaller Companies sector.

Neptune Russia & Greater Russia, managed by Robin Geffen, came in third place, returning 116.03% over the year. (article continues below)

Three commodities funds also featured in the top 10: JP Morgan Natural Resources, Oceanic Australian Natural Resources, and Ruffer Baker Steel Gold.

Two UK All Companies funds were among the top performers: SVM UK Opportunities, and Standard Life UK Equity Unconstrained.

Regional offerings from two groups also featured—JP Morgan New Europe and Neptune Latin America delivered 102.63% and 94.19% respectively.

Among the top 10 sellers for the year were three Invesco Perpetual equity income offerings, run by Neil Woodford, and Invesco Perpetual Corporate Bond. Three Jupiter funds, and offerings from Aberdeen, Artemis, and Cazenove, also made the bestsellers list.

In a statement, Ben Lundie, the head of Vantage development, says: “With interest rates at historic lows, many investors had to consider investments (as opposed to cash) in order to generate an income. This led to corporate bond and equity income funds being favoured during the year.

“Absolute return funds also continued to grow in popularity. Jupiter and Invesco Perpetual were favoured by investors last year as they stayed faithful to the larger brands.”
